Our commitment
As part of the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group we at Norfolkline believe in sustainability.
In line with our values we are committed to developing environmentally friendly solutions to the challenge on environment and climate change.
Not only does this offer a competitive edge to our business, equally important are the benefits it brings to the environment and climate.
Responding to the climate crisis
"Global warming is a reality. Temperatures are rising as more greenhouse gases are emitted to the atmosphere. Environmental conditions are changing too and thereby jeopardising our usual way of living and working. The A.P. Moller - Maersk Group shares the concern among politicians, businesses and the general public about the state of the world.
In our opinion, we all need to take responsibility and action. In the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group we have, for several years, worked on reducing our environmental impact. We have a tradition of being innovative, which is also the case when it comes to environmental initiatives and developments.
This effort has earned us the position as an industry leader in several business areas. Being a group of our size we feel particularly committed to contributing with sustainable solutions in the industries where we are active. Numerous examples show how we already work to be energy efficient at our vessels and rigs.
To mention a few we optimise engines, minimise friction in the water and install waste heat recovery. The main objective of these initiatives are to reduce our fuel consumption since this serves two purposes at the same time: Lowering undesired emissions to air such as CO2, SOx and NOx and cutting our costs.
In 2008 we reached a number of important milestones. We decided on an environmental strategy for the entire Group as well as publishing our first group report on Health, Safety and Environment. By focusing on energy efficiency in our strategy we furthermore commit ourselves to do more than regulations requires.
Our first HSE Report has brought us a baseline for future progress on reporting and performance. These initiatives, as well as the new maerskgreen section of our website, are ways of showing our commitment to the environmental agenda. Still, we are convinced fossil fuels will remain a prime energy source for many years to come.
Also we acknowledge that we are part of two very energy intensive industries – shipping and exploration and production of oil and gas. The greater our obligation is to seek substantial progress on environment and climate issues.
This is also reflected in our present considerations to sign up to Global Compact and the Carbon Disclosure Project."
